When I talked about what a writer can learn from children's novels , I said that I would return to the topic, to analyze these stories from the point of view of reading and not of writing. To understand its value in literature . I like reading children's novels, both because I would like to one day write for this audience and because I find them relaxing and always fun to read . It's like a new world to discover and I believe it can satisfy all tastes. There is someone who tends to devalue this type of literature - as well as children's comics - considering it to be of the B series, not at the level of serious novels or deeper stories. In reality, perhaps, it is the exact opposite: it is not easy, I think, to write novels for children and teenagers , because many details have to be taken into consideration. Why, then, is literature for children and young people important? Here are my reasons.
It welcomes an audience of minors This is the first reason that comes to mind and I think it is also the most valid of all: what else do children and teenagers read? If there were no such literature, there would be no stories for them. They would be cut off from reading. And don't tell me that they can read school books, because we have all been Special Data children and we know very well that we didn't like reading those books (except for the nerds who will read this post). Literature for children (from the ages of six to 13, let's say, then we enter the category defined as young adult , for teenagers) must therefore continue to exist and always be populated with new books. Helps the development of the mind This reason is closely linked to the previous one. Reading is good for mental health , we know it. For minors, therefore, reading improves their brain and cognitive development.
It helps them develop creativity, but also to form their own opinions, to broaden their imagination. Here reading, in the formative years, becomes a real necessity. For some developmental psychologists, reading improves the social aspect of minors , because it shows them more points of view, making them get to know other children and teenagers and not fossilizing them in the egocentrism of an early age. Improve the language of minors If reading is good for a writer, because thanks to books he will be able to learn about new narrative solutions and because he will enrich his vocabulary, this is equally true for the little ones. Thanks to reading they will be able to improve their language , because they will know other words, they will learn grammatical rules better , because they will find them applied and not just explained. Show the public the problems of minors Every time I read a novel for children, I immerse myself in a world that has now vanished for me, replaced by adulthood and a whole series of other problems which, due to the selfishness of adults, are more serious.
