It’s cheaper to hire independently, but you have no back up if they are sick, no insurance if they are injured, and no guarantees about their honesty or work ethic. However, with an agency you can lose autonomy. They can demand quite a bit, and you have to do it. After my mom’s devastating stroke, per her wishes we pulled her out of a facility and were required to pay for 24/7 care, even though I lived next door and was more than willing to be there at night. The alternative was no guarantee of service. If someone was sick they would pull my mom’s aide and send her to someone else.
